Reflection on Social Media Case 2: Ellen Degeneres and most Re-Tweeted Photo

Who knew that social media and chicken nuggets were so powerful. When this dynamic duo was put together, they created such a frenzy all over the world and beat Ellen Degeneres most re-tweeted photo of all time. The fact that these two posts were so popular is interesting, but what is even more interesting is the driving force behind the two tweets. Ellen Degeneres photo at the Grammy's is considered to be "popular" because Ellen already had such a huge fan base of over 76 million followers. What this means is Ellen's popular photo was re-tweeted over 3.4 million times because she has over 76 million followers on Twitter. Ellen's photo was defamed as the most re-tweeted photo when Carter Wilkerson asked Wendys how he can get free nuggets and they told him he needed to get 18 million re-tweets. His post went "viral", which means it was popular because of the content, not because of his fan base.  Though Carter didn't get 18 million re-tweets on Twitter, he still got his nuggs because it was the most re-tweeted photo on Twitter ever.

For Wendy's, this was a great campaign for them that didn't cost them anything. It was free advertising to millions of viewers. The best part for them was they gave it to him once he hit the most re-tweets at 3.6 million. This makes Wendy's look not only giving, but like will follow through.

The most interesting part of this viral post to me was that a boy wanting chicken nuggets received more eyes than anything else on Twitter. There are so many more viable topics that could go viral on Twitter. However, with this post, we see the power of social media and what a true force it is in today's world because it gives everyone the chance to have a  voice.
