Reflection on Social Media Case 3: Tom Petty’s “Death” and Death Blog Post Deadline
FAKE NEWS is all you hear about anymore. In classes we are taught to be sure if content is real, and be be very conscious of who we trust online. This case of Tom Petty's "Death" is just one more example of how fake news can ruin a lot of things for people. This "Death" is just one more example of celebrities deaths that are fake news. People like Brittany Spears, Sylvester Stallone, Axl Rose, and even Miley Cyrus have all "died". This is because of the power of social media. As I mentioned in my previous blog post, it is soch a driving force in today's world, anything and everything makes a huge difference. In this case, Rolling Stone put out an article about his death before verifying that he was actually DEAD. This absolutely makes me wonder about not only Rolling Stone, but all news outlets.
What kind of content is being fed to us? What do we actually believe? Who can we trust? Anymore, these quesitons of doubt are constatly running through our minds. It is events like fake deaths, Brigham Young univerisity buying University of Utah and anything else people post to get a rise out of the social media world. It is contributed to by the millennial generation, and their constant interaction about all thoughts and feelings on the internet. It not only makes it hard to be a consumer of this product, but to be on the manufacturing side of this product. You have to have a consistently TRUE product in order to have any trust from your audience.
This is across all channels, social media, texting, emails, messenger apps, your choice in music, where you frequently eat, all of it. And if you aren't careful about what you say, you too may end up as another victim of social media death.

I like your post, I think you nailed it when you said fake news is all over now. I think you make a great point when you say that you need to have a consistently true product to have trust from your audience. The next time a public figure dies, all the news channels involved are probably going to be a lot more careful.
