Reflection on Social Media Case 4: Nestle’s “Funner Menu Options”

Nestle Company has taken re-branding to a whole new level with their idea of a "Funner Menu Options". This idea gave Nestle's consumers an opportunity to see a funner side of Nestle's company. Something as simple as a fun customer service hotline to call had such a big impact and ended up spreading like wildfire. It gave consumers a pick me up in their day, and a great reputation for their company as well. They had fun menu options that told them jokes, sounds of bubble wrap, cannon balls or even have a boy express his love to you were options. To say the least, Nestle was famous for their creative call line phone numbers, but never for something like this before.
I think having menu options like this on call lines not only hasn't been done before, but it has given Nestle the opportunity to stand out from its competitors. This campaign was the boost that the company needed and helped them create a whole new brand for themselves.
The biggest thing that helped this new menu option spread for Nestle was social media. It was something unique that people would definitely want to try out, but even more intriguing if people are talking about it on social media. This is something that would be considered to be viral because Nestle didn't have an extensively huge fan base that was following them on social media. This was something that was advertised by consumers on social media and by word of mouth and consumed by consumers of Nestle's products. In the end, it was a win-win for the company because such a small change had such a large impact on the company as a whole. They let the content happen naturally rather than created hashtags for the content to go viral on social media. People's responses to this were positive and showed once again that content that goes viral just from being fun, not from being any kind of actual content.

  1. Great job Erin! I liked that you brought up that it doesn't take a company forcing a campaign on social media for it to be successful. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks Karla! I feel that companies using their consumers to advertise for them is so smart, but they just need to have the right approach, like Nestle in order to succeed.
